From Turnaround to Jump Around: Celebrate Success

In a five year span, Jones Sr. High School went from a school in "Turnaround" to a school that saw students "Jump Around" with excitement due to academic achievement. This session will explore various techniques in celebrating student success and the strategies that are utilized in making JSHS a school that "Embraces Education and Expects Excellence."

Engaging Students through a Common InstructionalFramework

Presenters will share how Duplin County Schools has implemented a Common Instructional Framework that allows all students to read, write, think, and talk in every class every day. This framework is supported through a partnership with NC New Schools and provides and excellent approach to implementing the new state curriculum.

College Central Hub

College Central serves as a hub for college material to include college application advising, scholarships,
SAT, ACT, fee waivers, interview skills, resume' building, summer enrichment, college fair and university field trips, onsite college admissions offering, and much more. The college advisor assists students, parents, teachers and administrators with test prep and course selection advising.

Engaging Parents Workshop

This workshop will show how we are holding highly engaging parent make and take workshops for k-12 parents across the district. Parents leave the workshops with materials they can take back and use with their child at home. The activities and materials are all based on reading research that can be easily implemented.

Data Teams

This presentation highlights how Jones MIddle School uses Data Walls and Data Meetings to move children. The team will walk through the processes JMS completed this year to put Data Teams in place.

Integrating STEM through a Modular Environment

Craven County Schools has implemented modular learning environments for elementary science, 8th grade math, Math I, and CTETechnology Education. Each modular environment emphasizes application of skills through hand-on learning activities. Students are exposed to various STEM industries and careers that are available in Eastern North Carolina.

Customized PD: It Can be Done!

Does your LEA have teachers at varying proficiency levels in regards to curriculum knowledge, instructional effectiveness and the proper use of assessment? Does your current PD plan meet the needs of all? This session will provide a model of individualized professional development that can be replicated in any LEA. The model is directly aligned to the NC Teaching Standards and uses a Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment rubric to measure individual growth and district effectiveness.

ASW Process (Teachers)

The Analysis of Student Work (ASW) Process is the Standard 6 measure that AP/IB, Arts Education, Healthful Living, and World Language teachers will use beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. This session provides an overview of the ASW process for teachers and professional development materials to facilitate the first year of implementation.

Districts will have the opportunity to explore OER (open educational resources in Mathematics) and DPI resources as well as participate in a Q & A session.

Instructional Resources in SchoolNet

This overview of Schoolnet will show attendees how to search for and create instructional materials. Participants will also be trained on how to use the Lesson Planner tool built into Schoolnet. This session will be an introduction for participants who will receive hands on experience and have an opportunity to ask questions.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery

NCDPI is committed to personalize learning for all students, including AIG and other advanced learners. Come and join DPI and members of the CDM Working Committee to review NC’s Credit by Demonstrated (CDM) policy and Implementation Guide. We will review basic information and the multi-phase assessment as well look at tools for implementation from NC school districts. We will discuss the benefits of CDM as well as problem-solve challenges together.

Read to Achieve

During this session participants will receive Read to Achieve updates, participate in regional data reviews, and have a collaborative discussion focused on the framework for supporting the upcoming year.

CTE WorkKeys

As districts wrestle with how to increase performance in each facet of the state accountability model, WorkKeys proposes a particular challenge—a significant percentage of overall performance is based on scores of Concentrators and not all students. To help districts understand the importance of WorkKeys testing, CTE directors will share information about what WorkKeys testing entails, explore ways to improve performance, and allow time to discuss options. Methods of improvement will range from promotion and communication to in-class and outside-of-class options. Strategies for improvement will be included.

Learning to Speak Learning

Do we really speak learning in our classrooms? Coaching teachers to fully integrate academic language into their daily practice is a worthy challenge that this session will help you tackle. Together, let’s demystify academic language and begin speaking learning fluently with all of our students.
